SMWS 93.51, Glen Scotia 12yo, bourbon cask, “Matron’s sick bay and Angostura Bitters”

Nose: First, a clear but surprisingly pleasant hint of skunk.  Oil slick.  Burnt baking spices?  Complex.

Palate: Delicious.  Sweeter than expected, yet mineralic.  Gingerbread cookie dough, some smoke and peat toward the finish, but beautifully interwoven with the baked goods.

Finish: A bit short, mostly focused on the medicinal notes.

Overall: Like most of the Society Glen Scotias that I’ve tried, this is great stuff.  A distinctive signature unlike that of any other distillery in Scotland.  This is a particularly canonical and well-balanced bottling, not quite as extreme (or fun) as the SMWS 93.50 “Hot embers at the gates of Hell”.  Only the finish was a disappointment.  I would love to taste this after a few more years in the barrel.
